Sunday the last day for Vermeil as Chiefs coach?

According to local reports from within the Chiefs organization, Chiefs Head Coach Dick Vermeil is going to retire after the game this sunday against the Bengals (unless they make the playoffs, then he will coach a little longer until the season is over). Not a real big shock there. Nothing against him, but I think its time to try a new direction for the team anyway.

More of the Dog!

Good news if you are a fan of the show "Dog the Bounty Hunter". The Dog, Duane Chapman, signed a $2.6 million deal for next season's episodes. If you have not watched the show yet, you should check it out. Its a family affair as they chase down bail jumpers. The show is on A&E if you have not yet seen it.

More idiocy by the Vikings

By now you have probably heard about the infamous boat party involving numerous members of the Minnesota Vikings. Well now 4 of them have been charged with a crime as a result of the booze and sex filled cruise. I was by no means surprised that Fred Smoot was one of those involved, in addition to being a very overrated cornerback, he seems to be a dumbass. Culpepper was there too, way to go Dante, way to cap the worst year of your career.

I am personally not shocked by any of this. I think Mike Tice goes a little too light on the discipline. Tice basically has said of this matter that he can take no action against any player until they are convicted of a crime, if they ever are. He is right on that point, but at least he might consider expressing disapproval of the whole thing so that people know he gives a shit. Right now things look pretty lax on that team, sounds like their new owner is none too impressed by the situation either.

I think the Lions should have fired Millen instead of Mariucci

I am not surprised that the Detroit Lions fired head coach Steve Mariucci, given that the team has had a horrific season in light of expectations of a great year. But why make Mariucci culpable and not Matt Millen, by most accounts far and away the worst GM in the NFL today. Mariucci did not build this team, Millen gets the credit for that. With 3 WR's picked in the first round in the past 3 years, and the team adding Jeff Garcia at QB and Marcus Pollard at TE, and Kevin Jones coming into his one, most experts thought this offense would really take off. But in reality it has not. The wide receivers have accomplished little except for collecting huge paychecks. When free agent Scott Vines is usually the go to receiver amongst all of those high draft picks, you have a problem. Pollard is playing ok and Roy Williams is having a decent year but Charles Rogers and Mike Williams have done little and Kevin Jones is not having a good year either. Both Garcia and Joey Harrington have QB ratings south of 70, not a good sign either.

The bottom line is that while admittedly Mariucci is not exactly a hard assed coach, you certainly cannot blame all of this on him. The amazing part? The Ford family, owners of the Detroit Lions, gave Millen a fat contract extension before the season, and that with his track record of accomplishing virtually nothing except being a former tv announcer.

Another bad sign? When fans in Detroit hold rallies calling for their GM to be fired, that is downright scary, especially in Detroit where the football fans are fairly used to a mediocre and underachieving team. Maybe they need to bring back Barry Sanders and Billy Sims?

You can read an article about Mariucci's firing and other likely coaching changes on Yahoo at the link below:
